Kinetic sculpture

Recycling, derelict materials, and self-sufficiency are keywords that would emerge in a possible future where new life forms will have to rely on other building blocks than those required for biology. Thinking of plastic being the only thing left for grabs for new life forms has resulted in a series of ‘living’ kinetic sculptures.

These sculptures would act like little sprouts from this extreme futuristic scenario.

The workshop will be run by artist Egil Paulsen. Attendants are invited to create playful little sculptures that move with the help of solar cells. Combine art and technology in a fun way by creating simple poetic machines, which in turn gives way to experiencing renewable energy technology, with movement and animism as aesthetic qualities.

Schedule:
1pm to 5 pm: Workshop: Participants will become familiar with how solar power works, and create art using renewable energy.

Explore plastic pollutants in the marine environment using DIY science

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

Artists and scientists Kat and Gjino invite us to examine the unseen and hard to detect impact of our increasing use of “hidden” plastic – plastic that we can’t see, like micro beads, or that we don’t (yet) have a narrative of as polluting, such as 3D printed materials. At the workshop, we’ll be refining DIY chemical tests for micro-plastics, looking at fish samples from the local fishmongers.

Over 4 days of activities, starting with sample collection on a field trip to the fish market, participants will go through a process of exploration of these newly developed DIY techniques, to better understand the presence of plastics in the marine environment around Bergen.

The workshop will culminate with a Sushi Roulette afterparty, where through the encounter with real and dummy sushi the participants are challenged to test their reactions to the thought of consuming plastics as
food.

Schedule:
Day 1: Tuesday 11 Oct. | Meet-up at 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
3pm – 5pm: Field trip. Visit and finding fish at the Fish Market and other fish shops.

Day 2: Wednesday 12 Oct. | 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
1pm to 6 pm: Workshop part 1: Establishing an open source and open hardware lab for DIY biology, chemistry and marine fauna research.
6pm-7pm: Cleaning the lab.

Day 3: Thursday 13th Oct. | 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
1pm to 5 pm: Workshop part 2.
5pm – 6pm: Debate: Public discussions with local scientist, environmental scientist, fisherman’s, artists and
interested parties.
6pm-7pm: Cleaning the lab.

Day 4: Friday 14 Oct. | 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
12:30pm – 2pm: Setting up the exhibition and visual materials with the artists.
2 pm- 3pm: Sushi Roulette Closing Event: Public presentation of the outcome using all the data and tools
developed and recorded during the workshop days, and sushi served.

Projects

http://worldflows.net http://opendroplet.org
Kat F Austen is a succession of experiences and an assemblage of aspirations. In the temporal melting-pot of her life so far she has produced work as an artist, an environmental scientist, a journalist, a writer and much in between. As an artist Kat deals with themes of environment, social justice, communities and human relations to digital culture. She creates experiences, stories and playful installations, mixing fact and fiction closely, so troublesome. She wants to touch your heart, mind, soul, body.

Kat is Artist in Residence at the Faculty of Maths and Physical Sciences, University College London. She has exhibited widely, including at Museo Diego Rivera, Mexico City, Kulurbraueri, Berlin, Kreuzberg Pavillion, Berlin, The Crystal, London, Schwartz Gallery, London, Regenerate Gallery, London and Williams Art, Cambridge. She is Head of Research and Design at social enterprise iilab, leading the Open Droplet water sensor project, which was recently included on the Serpentine Gallery’s extinct.ly platform. With this project,
she is focussing on co-design, physically evocative representations of data and community stewardship of water.

Kat holds a PhD in chemistry from UCL and worked as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Cambridge. Her writing has appeared in Nature, The Ecologist and The Guardian, and she consults widely on the intersection of science, art and technology, including as a Futureshaper for Forum for the Future, for the European Commission and UK water regulator Ofwat.

The environment is Kat’s passion, and her interest is largely held by finding intellectual, experiential and sensorial ways of understanding existence in all its complexity. Her work explores the interplay between acts at different levels – individual, collective, communal, municipal, state, national, international – in the context of a global, digitally-enabled society. The aesthetics in her artworks treads the line between naive and polished, messy and sleek, humorous and disjointed. For instance, she drowned a lot of tiny people in a bath to make
a point about social media. Kat has a PADI open water diving license and also licence to be crew on the yacht.

ABOUT PIXEL LAB | LABORATOIRE OUVERT
————————————

Within the context of la Gaité lyrique’s Laboratoire Ouvert residency
program, Mal au Pixel has proposed from May 2014 to April 2015, a cycle
of open meetings, gatherings and workshops offering critical points of
view on current, emerging or future technologies. Artist and researchers
have been invited to transmit their know-how during a workshop, in areas
such as liquid data transmission low-tech systems to organic matter
based computers, celestial bodies tracking devices, Tempest based
radios, or even, cybernetic ghosts detectors.

In Parallel, Mal au Pixel and the Pixelache Network have conducted from
2013 to 2015, a cycle of international meetings and workshops. An
initiative gathering five European structures dedicated to open source
and open hardware : Pixelache (FI), Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS) and
Access Space (UK). These collaborations aimed to build and feed a
database of resources and documentation on organizing festivals,
supported, the European fund Grundtvig.

Pixel Lab has been developed as part of a larger EU Grundtvig supported
project called Open Sourcing Festivals, co-produced by five experimental
art, design and technology organizations from the Pixelache Network and
focused on open source culture. Open Sourcing Festivals is a mobile
circuit of workshops and seminars organized across Europe during
2013-2015 by Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS), Mal au Pixel (FR) and
Pixelache (FI). In the process the partners have been gradually working
towards ‘open-sourcing’ the knowledge embodied in their respective
workshops and festival production, in order to share it with a broader
range of users. A database of resources and documentation is under
construction and accessible at http://opensourcingfestivals.eu

In partnership with Pixelache Network. http://www.network.pixelache.ac
With the support of the Grundtvig Foundation for Life Long Learning.

Introducing ShrimpCraft! Tools for the water curious. OPEN workshop

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) with Ross Dalziel and Adrian McEwen (Liverpool)
Open call for participants!
OPEN SOURCE FESTIVALS – DO IT ANYWAY (Sheffield, Uk)
16-05-2015 12:00 16:00

ShrimpCraft! is a project building water sensing computer kits with- and for kids.

The approach is for the group to become co-researchers and assemble simple water sensors based on the Arduino platform, and then use them to explore their water environment.

box_amanda

Instead of Arduino, we use shrimping.it to buy ‘shrimp core’ kits with Persistence Of Vision extender kits. Shrimping sell cheap kits and distribute free information on how to build Arduino compatible breadboards for prototyping.

Children build their own ‘computers’ and sensors and then visualise the data using simple LEDs flashing on the breadboard, a simple processing sketch and then draw graphs in minecraft on the FACT server at mc.fact.co.uk as its a space young people are very engaged with. Along the way they are introduced to how to go about making inferences from the data they collect in the environment; does a certain temperature and muddy water mean the water is healthy? Or do we need water full of useful stuff for animals to live in it?

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) is choreographer, Professor at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Academy of Dance. She works with shifting contexts of choreography in contemporary society through open research and experimentation.

Together with Ross Dalziel (DoeS Liverpool , UK) she is co-founder of Currently, a research initiative that aims to get people to engage with the marine world in new ways across different disciplines, from sailing to soap making and computer science.

Participating are a loose collective of artists, architects, scientists and technologists living mainly in coastal regions of Norway and the UK. From 2013-14 they have included Hillevi Munthe, Elisabeth Weihe, Jana Winderen, Etienne Gernez, Adrian McEwen, Hans Jørgen Wallin Weihe and artist groups Open Source Swan Pedalo, Owl Project and POINT FIVE. They have worked alongside Liverpool’s National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), National Museums Liverpool, Liverpool Maritime Museum and National Maritime Museum Oslo.

Each has a passion for the water and a drive to uncover hidden and forgotten spaces of the marine environment. Together they are producing new, exciting and eclectic work for the public to engage and play with – an open response to the marine sciences and maritime culture.

Solar Sculptures
Nature gives way to speciation depending on the building blocks it can offer. Only by the decades, enormous amounts of plastic, silicon and metals has been dug up, refined, and put into circulation. It has been said that we are the genitals of our technology. We exist only to improve next years model. How can we recognize this quiet neighbour?

Recent studies have shown that the electrical resistance in soil above a buried carcass has a different resistivity to that of near by soil due to the decomposition of bodily tissue. The body leaves a “real”, quantifiable electrical trace when it is dead. Following this idea that traces of the dead can be measured via electricity it may be possible that these traces can be found elsewhere such as in the electromagnetic field.

In this workshop the construction of various electronic devices which apparently enhance the possibility of communication with spirits both audibly and visibly will be undertaken. Attempts at direct electromagnetic induction from such a vitalist earth to human brain will be made in the construction of a diy earth-brain interface, along with devices such as the Germanium Trans-Dimensional Communication Receptor (TDC) and other EMF detectors, emitters, and amplifiers.
These will then be applied to Venetian decomposing geo-bio canal soup mixes in a final experimental communication system performance.

The workshop is free. Places limited to 10.
May 28 – 29th, 12pm – late.

We’re excited to share some positive news: thanks to your support, we’ve secured in funding from the city about one-third of what we usually received before cuts, which has allowed us to regain our operational footing. This is an important milestone, and we’re truly grateful for your solidarity. Thank you for believing in Piksel and our mission. Let’s keep working together to build a vibrant future for art, technology, and society. Warm regards, The Piksel Team
