3-bit_shirt_ web

In collaboration with Trafo we have invited Afroditi Psarra and Constanza Pina to host this exciting three-day workshop at the public library in Bergen.

Time: Monday 19. November – Wednesday 21. November.  4PM- 8PM

Who can attend: Young people between the ages 16 and 22. Anyone who is interested in wearable electronics, e-textiles, 8-bit music and DIY electronics. No necessary background in programming or electronics is required.

<3-bit is a workshop on wearable technology and sound experimentation. The aim of the workshop is to create a shirt capable of capturing and transmitting your heartbeat though the use of DIY electronics and creative coding. The workshop consists on a practical introduction to Arduino programming using the LilyPad micro-controller and experimenting with handmade speaker coils and building soft-circuits on fabric. Though the workshop the participants will be able to engage in the process of making electronic textiles and will share a fun hands-on experience with other like-minded individuals.

Call: Piksel Remote Hacklab – Experimental Communication System Open Workshop, Venice

Piksel Remote Hacklab: Experimental Communication System Open Workshop,

Free 2-day workshop, Venice, May 28-29th, 12pm-late.

Recent studies have shown that the electrical resistance in soil above a buried carcass has a different resistivity to that of near by soil due to the decomposition of bodily tissue. The body leaves a “real”, quantifiable electrical trace when it is dead. Following this idea that traces of the dead can be measured via electricity it may be possible that these traces can be found elsewhere such as in the electromagnetic field.

In this workshop the construction of various electronic devices which apparently enhance the possibility of communication with spirits both audibly and visibly will be undertaken. Attempts at direct electromagnetic induction from such a vitalist earth to human brain will be made in the construction of a diy earth-brain interface, along with devices such as the Germanium Trans-Dimensional Communication Receptor (TDC) and other EMF detectors, emitters, and amplifiers.
These will then be applied to Venetian decomposing geo-bio canal soup mixes in a final experimental communication system performance.

The workshop is free. Places limited to 10.
May 28 – 29th, 12pm – late.

Piksel presents: Arduino workshop for young people in collaboration with Trafo

We have invited Afroditi Psarra from Athens to host this exciting three-day workshop at the public library in Bergen.

Time: Monday 19. November – Wednesday 21. November.  4PM- 8PM

Who can attend: Young people between the ages 16 and 22. Anyone who is interested in Arduino programming, e-textiles, 8-bit music and DIY electronics. No necessary background in programming is required.

This workshop consists of an introduction to Arduino programming through the creation of a simple embroidered synthesizer. The participants are going to engage in the process of prototyping and building DIY electronics on textile using various components – such as LEDs, resistors, sensors, buttons and buzzers, and conductive materials such as conductive thread and conductive fabric. Through the construction of an embroidered synthesizer the participants will get familiar with the concept of electronic textiles and soft-circuits and their use in fashion, art and performance, while experimenting on 8-bit sound.

Build your own low cost biosensing wearable device for muscle sounds.

Location: Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek, Bergen, Norway. Free admission. Monday October 15th- Thursday October 18th. 4 PM – 8 PM. Full program TBA.

Sign up via email:  info (AT) piksel.no

About:
New media and sonic artist, performer and teacher, Marco Donnarumma was born in Italy and is based in Edinburgh, UK.

Motivated by the principles of post-modernism and open source philosophy, his works explore the body to unfold alternate relations between Man and machine. Weaving a thread around biomedia research, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practices and subversive coding, he looks at the collision of critical creativity with humanized technologies. His biophysical system Xth Sense was named the 2012 “world’s most innovative new musical instrument” by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, US.

TinyVGA workshop – Timelapse

The TInyVGA board is a very small (30×45 mm) PCB board which generates a VGA signal using a PIC microprocessor.

This is a timelapse animation of the “Generating VGA signals” workshop given by Arjan Scherpenisse on November 22nd, 2009 at the Piksel09 festival. It was created using Toonloop, the live stop motion animation software by Alexandre Quessy also presented at the festival.

GOSH! – Grounding Open Source Hardware

gosh

The Grounding Open Source Hardware (GOSH!) Workshop and Summit at The Banff Centre serves to bring together the many and disparate makers, producers, theorizers and promoters of physical objects that come to life under open and distributed models, and to facilitate the emerging dialogue on both artist-driven and socially conscious open source hardware.

The Workshop and Summit offer a unique opportunity to bring “down to earth” the normally virtual and on-line networks of open source hardware collaboration. Bringing together these cultural producers in one place for an extended period of collaboration, exchange and dialogue, GOSH! will place a critical focus on the possibilities for social transformation and the expansive cultural and artistic possibilities of open source hardware practice.

You can read more about the GOSH! events here, or else visit the Workshop and Summit schedules.

[3] NEWSLETTER

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

[1] SOMMERCAMPWORKSTATION 2009 – laboratory for art and media Berlin

sommercamp+workstation=2009 is meant as a practical example of the feasibility of a “laboratory for art and media in Berlin” carrying on the idea of TESLA – medialab. The starting point of the four-month project is the sommercamp from 10 to 16 August – a module to work and generate ideas, with ten open workshops and two days of final presentations on 15/16 August 2009 at the House of World Culture and a kick-off on 14 August 2009 at the radialsystem. The second part of the project is the workstation – intended as project production support – with four three-month project residencies and a curatorial grant that are produced in close collaboration with local and international partners. A discursive weekend will take place from 13 to 15 November 2009 with the invited artists/projects and experts from science and technology at Berlin based general public, in collaboration with DISK/ctm. Hacker Space Festival 2009 | Call For Proposals | HSF2009

In 2008, we organized HSF[1] on the spot, as an ad-hoc meeting for
hackerspaces-related networks, technical and artistic research emerging
from them and social questionning arising from them. This sudden
experiment proved to be a huge success, as much as on the
self-organizing level as on the participants and meetings quality, as
well as the emotionally-charged ambient, the kind of which you make
fond memories.
