PERFORMANCES PROGRAM

From 24 to 27th of November, artists from a dozen of countries will meet at the PIKSEL International Festival in Bergen. Throughout concerts, installations, performances, workshops and presentations, artists will share different ways to look at our marine environment.

web-main

Artists struggle to make their own instruments, even if commercial brands compete to give the best features to the sound market, artists have proved to be more demanding. When this happens many of them start creating their own instruments, and share their findings with other musicians at international venues. This is what Piksel is about, an unique festival which requires artists to use only free technologies and open hardware and software to make their live shows.

From 24th to 27th of November, Piksel presents at Bergen the most outstanding audiovisual international performers devoted to this experimental scene. Hosted in several well known Bergen venues (Landmark, BAS), Piksel seeks to incorporate every year new spaces to catch up the Bergen spirit. This year that place is THE MILL. Situated at the end of the bay, this industrial building will open its doors to held the art exhibition and the Saturday night concerts. From 9pm to 3 am.

HALLOGENERATOR, ALGORAVE and Sista Piksel party will close the night events.

Thanks to all participants!! Great work!

Sushi Roulette is a workshop by Kat Googie Austen and Gen O Fenring – Gjino Šutić commissioned by Piksel as a follow up of a previous workshop, Pikslo Deep Diving, hosted by Piksel 15 and developed together with Robertina Sebjanic and Slavko Glamocanin. The topic of that first workshop was to find out new DIY protocols to isolate micropollutants in Bergen’s algae. We want to thank Kat and Gjino for the fantastic work they have done. Thank Cat and Zack (Center for Genomic Gastronomy) for bringing their students, to all the participants for their work and interest and to KHIB, Universitetet i Bergen and s.NET to make the collaboration possible.

Artists and scientists Kat and Gjino invite us to examine the unseen and hard to detect impact of our increasing use of “hidden” plastic – plastic that we can’t see, like micro beads, or that we don’t (yet) have a narrative of as polluting, such as 3D printed materials. At the workshop, we’ll be refining DIY chemical tests for micro-plastics, looking at fish samples from the local fishmongers.

Over 4 days of activities, starting with sample collection on a field trip to the fish market, participants will go through a process of exploration of these newly developed DIY techniques, to better understand the presence of plastics in the marine environment around Bergen.

The workshop will culminate with a Sushi Roulette afterparty, where through the encounter with real and dummy sushi the participants are challenged to test their reactions to the thought of consuming plastics as
food.

Schedule:
Day 1: Tuesday 11 Oct. | Meet-up at 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
3pm – 5pm: Field trip. Visit and finding fish at the Fish Market and other fish shops.

Day 2: Wednesday 12 Oct. | 1st floor Mesanine, Student Center
1pm to 6 pm: Workshop part 1: Establishing an open source and open hardware lab for DIY biology, chemistry and marine fauna research.
6pm-7pm: Cleaning the lab.

Solar kinetic sculptures

Kinetic sculpture

Recycling, derelict materials, and self-sufficiency are keywords that would emerge in a possible future where new life forms will have to rely on other building blocks than those required for biology. Thinking of plastic being the only thing left for grabs for new life forms has resulted in a series of ‘living’ kinetic sculptures.

These sculptures would act like little sprouts from this extreme futuristic scenario.

The workshop will be run by artist Egil Paulsen. Attendants are invited to create playful little sculptures that move with the help of solar cells. Combine art and technology in a fun way by creating simple poetic machines, which in turn gives way to experiencing renewable energy technology, with movement and animism as aesthetic qualities.

Schedule:
1pm to 5 pm: Workshop: Participants will become familiar with how solar power works, and create art using renewable energy.

Introducing ShrimpCraft! Tools for the water curious. OPEN workshop

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) with Ross Dalziel and Adrian McEwen (Liverpool)
Open call for participants!
OPEN SOURCE FESTIVALS – DO IT ANYWAY (Sheffield, Uk)
16-05-2015 12:00 16:00

ShrimpCraft! is a project building water sensing computer kits with- and for kids.

The approach is for the group to become co-researchers and assemble simple water sensors based on the Arduino platform, and then use them to explore their water environment.

box_amanda

Instead of Arduino, we use shrimping.it to buy ‘shrimp core’ kits with Persistence Of Vision extender kits. Shrimping sell cheap kits and distribute free information on how to build Arduino compatible breadboards for prototyping.

Children build their own ‘computers’ and sensors and then visualise the data using simple LEDs flashing on the breadboard, a simple processing sketch and then draw graphs in minecraft on the FACT server at mc.fact.co.uk as its a space young people are very engaged with. Along the way they are introduced to how to go about making inferences from the data they collect in the environment; does a certain temperature and muddy water mean the water is healthy? Or do we need water full of useful stuff for animals to live in it?

More info at:
http://cheapjackprojects.tumblr.com/post/93588881181/shrimpcraft-tools-for-the-water-curious

To participate send an email to: piksel15[at]piksel.no

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) is choreographer, Professor at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Academy of Dance. She works with shifting contexts of choreography in contemporary society through open research and experimentation.

Together with Ross Dalziel (DoeS Liverpool , UK) she is co-founder of Currently, a research initiative that aims to get people to engage with the marine world in new ways across different disciplines, from sailing to soap making and computer science.

Participating are a loose collective of artists, architects, scientists and technologists living mainly in coastal regions of Norway and the UK. From 2013-14 they have included Hillevi Munthe, Elisabeth Weihe, Jana Winderen, Etienne Gernez, Adrian McEwen, Hans Jørgen Wallin Weihe and artist groups Open Source Swan Pedalo, Owl Project and POINT FIVE. They have worked alongside Liverpool’s National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), National Museums Liverpool, Liverpool Maritime Museum and National Maritime Museum Oslo.

Each has a passion for the water and a drive to uncover hidden and forgotten spaces of the marine environment. Together they are producing new, exciting and eclectic work for the public to engage and play with – an open response to the marine sciences and maritime culture.
