Piksel Fest Spill - celebrating art, technology, and ecology - May 21st to June 28th.
This years Piksel Fest Spill program explores DIY bio-art and investigates the intersection of art, science, and technology. Against the backdrop of urgent environmental challenges, artists come together to address themes such as biological diversity, climate change, and symbiosis through experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
At the heart of the festival are pioneering bio-artists like María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde (ES) (http://uh513.com/), who explore plant communication through the Internet and neural networks. Recognizing the disruptive potential of their work, Piksel has invited them to present a site-specific art installation where plants control our IoT system, manipulating both light and sound in the gallery, alongside workshops tailored for a diverse audience.

Exhibition: “Silent Vegetal Thoughts” by artists María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde
24. mai – 28. juni Wednesday – Sunday 12:00-18:00 Studio 207, Strandgaten 207, Bergen.
In this site-specific installation at Studio 207, the natural world intertwines with technology as plants take control over the studios environment.
Wired up with sensors that measure plant electrophysiology and connects to the surrounding technological elements, the plants will manipulate the light, sound, and mechanical systems created with relays, including Piksel Studio's internet-controlled lighting system. Based on changes in the plants electrical activity, the plants themselves are directing the installation, expressing themselves through a symphony of lights and sound.
Exhibition opening: May 24th 18:00-22:00 Introduction by the artists behind the installation, María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde (SP).

Piksel Kidz Lab – Discovery of Plant Magic: A Sensory Adventure with Soft Sensors
Tuesday, May 21st 17:00 – 20:00 Studio 207, Strandgaten 207, Bergen.
Soft Sensor Magic. Dive into the concept of soft sensors – flexible, adaptable devices capable of measuring changes in the environment. Explore how these soft sensors mimic the sensitivity of plants, making them perfect companions for our green adventure. Connect plants with soft sensors and IoT.
Participants witness the transformation as we connect soft sensors to plants, turning them into interactive, data-sharing companions.
Learn the basics of IoT technology and understand how it enables communication and collaboration between devices.
Led by artist María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde (SP) Suitable for both adults and kids from 10 years.

Monitoring the Environment of Plants
Saturday, May 25th, 15:00 - 18:00 Studio 207, Strandgaten 207, Bergen.
Plants exhibit remarkable responsiveness to their environment, reacting to stimuli from humans, other organisms, objects, and various environmental factors such as temperature, sound, and light.
In this workshop, led by artists María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde, sensors are utilized to monitor the plant’s surroundings in real-time, facilitated by a bespoke web platform tailored for this project. Through this exploration, we aim to deepen our understanding of the intricate interactions between plants and their environment, fostering awareness of the shared coexistence between living entities.
