PIKSEL
festival for elektronisk kunst og fri teknologi

As we ease into 2023, Piksel would like to look back on the success of the year we left behind, as well as look forward to exiting times ahead.

A highlight of 2022 was PIKSELXX AI AI AI, 17th – 20th November 2022, marking 20 years of new media art using Free/Libre technologies. In addition to an increased number of workshops, solo projects and AV performances, PIKSELXX AI AI AI presented one of the largest exhibitions in Bergen dedicated to electronic art.

The festival opening included the premiere of the IDLE experience for audience in the physical venue Studio 207. Utilizing the Internet of Things technologies the venue’s audiovisual devices got remotely controlled through the metaversal gallery Piksel Cyber Salon, mesmerizing the audience.

The main celebratory event was the seminar “PIKSEL XX. 20 years of Libre Electronic Art” 19th of November. Focusing on the Free/Libre and Open Source movement as a strategy for regaining artistic control of the technology, the seminar functioned as a means to bring attention to the close connections between art, politics, technology, and economy. We are super grateful to the artists helping us accomplish this!

A team from the Spanish National TV also came to Bergen to capture the essence of the Piksel 20 years anniversary. Airing on Tuesday 14.02.23, the TV program Metrópolis will show highlights of AV performances, the AI AI AI exhibition and interviews with artists and curators.

The celebration of Piksel turning 20 will continue in 2023, as we prepare to publish the book “20 years of Piksel”! Focusing on the 20 years of Piksel main themes, the publication will include articles written ‘ad hoc’ by the guest artists who contributed to the anniversary seminar. The seminar moderator, Dušan Barok , is the editor of the book.

Another exiting prospect for 2023 is the collaboration with Joana Moll as a continuation of the collaboration with The Critical Engineering Working Group. This will be the third year of collaboration.

We look forward to continue the IDLE project and settle in to a newly refurbished Studio 207!
