Det er glinsende gelégreier på bordene, folk lager krystaller og setter fisk på telefonen. Alt har kabler stikkende ut av seg, selv planter, og man kan røyke inne.

This year’s Piksel festival celebrating ‘Code Dreams’ saw the boundaries between artists, audience, hardware and software blur in the collective pursuit of a machinic unconscious, as well as a highly conscious celebration of FLOSS culture.
Review by M. Beatrice Fazi for Mute Magazine.
Ben Bogart has made a nice video documentation of his installation Dreaming Machine shown at Lydgalleriet during Piksel08. The video includes some spectacular views of the gallery and surrounding areas and subtitles explaining the details of the installation.
Alex Norman have just posted the first, ‘officially released,’ version of Data Jockey
(0.1) (GPL) as a world premiere presented at Piksel08.
Find it here:
For those who missed the presentation here is a brief description:

More to come!
real code [xxxxx_at_piksel_2008] aims to begin construction in Bergen
of a new world operating system making use of material, language and
descriptive means (aka. software). code relates both to a necessarily
hidden communication system (world revelation, rationalism as an
island) and to a novel way of examining the world. reflection is
encouraged in both directions. sample activities, such as measurement
of intensities, cutups, practical endophysics, real world disaster
analysis and biologic intervention are proposed below for an event
which builds and defines itself to some degree in isolation. Bergen
thus becomes an island of magic composed of smaller islands (a fish
farm, for example).
invited international participants include Otto E. Rossler, pioneer of
chaos theory research and endophysics, Jessica Rylan, renowned sound
artist and analogue electronics constructor, and Julian Oliver,
augmented reality coder, amongst many others [see below].

How does code dream? What are the dreams of code?
Piksel08 examines the other side of code, an alternative side to a hard-coded reality of work and play. Open hardware and free software project a utopic vision, yet exist within economies of capital, the dream factory of mainstream technology. Within the chance meeting of sewing machine and umbrella on the dissecting table, hardware and software are flattened.
Piksel08: code dreams explores the dreams of this soft machine; bachelors coding for pleasure, reverse engineering paranoiac constructs of the real, automatic coding practice, soft hardware, and everyday magic.

The selection process for piksel08 is more or less finished and we now have a preliminary list of participants. Not all of them are confirmed yet, but all in all it should be fairly complete.
This year we are moving all festival activities to StudioUSF where workshops, presentations, performances and some installations will be located. Other exhibitions in the festival period – dec. 4-7 – will be located at Galleri Volt and Lydgalleriet.
The main exhibition will be located at Galleri 3,14 in the period dec. 12 – jan. 25, which means it opens 1 week _after_ the festival.
The list of participants can be found in the Piksel wiki.

real code call
real.co.[de][re] actively explores code which both has strong effects on the real, constructing the world through control, prediction and description, and the code of the real, how the world as given is coded.
In a time of open hide-ware, of tempting Gnostic depths promoted by layered APIs and network models, real.co.[de][re] attempts to erase or rather flatten the distinction between software and hardware, to resolve a new political reference for real core code. real.co.[de] [re] asks a general question of a code nature beyond the prescribed
API (hard).
The twelve hour real.co.[de][re] session will attempt the active construction of a working code model (of any form) which addresses these concerns.
Hacked genres are not limited to the following suggestions: life coding, paranoiac practice, pornographic coding, data forensics, steganographic psychogeography, biologic hacking, EM scrying and …
Please submit a proposal in any form: dream diary, API description, instruction set, film script, event code, scientific abstract… before September 30th 2008 to real AT 1010 DOT co DOT uk

abstract code call
Abstract code is software whose results can be invisible, a software implementing different layers of action at the same time.
Abstract code is a connection to parallel worlds, a poetic formula dealing with outer forces. Code is art, its action is subtile, effective, magic.
