Press Note PIKSEL16 ZERO Level

Piksel 16, ZERO-Level
elektronisk kunst og fri teknologi
24-27 Nov
Bergen, Norway

PIKSEL16 Festival ZERO-LEVEL, elektronisk kunst og fri teknologi.

An independent look at the Bergen’s marine environment.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

From 24 to 27th of November, artists from a dozen of countries will meet at the PIKSEL International Festival in Bergen. Throughout concerts, installations, performances, workshops and presentations, artists will share different ways to look at our marine environment.

Are the fish we eat “feminized” by pollution? In a post-internet era, how would we create an alternative communication network? How can we collect direct data from our seas and learn to interpret that? Is the boat a new artistic mobility tool? Is it possible to prototype with ZERO-emission?

Biotechnology is no longer just a subject for scientists; experimental artists are also researching biological, biopolitical and bioefficiency issues that affect society as a whole. As conscious citizens, artists raise these questions to the general public through art works, performances and workshops where everyone is invited to participate.

Piksel16, ZERO-level, wants to focus on the biological and social aspects of the sea as a sustainable environment. Zero in the meaning of: zero-emissions, zero-footprints, zero-waste, zero-energy, zero-pollution, zero-plastic, zero-trash. Also Zero encourages bio-efficiency, bio-ecology, marine inheritance, sustainable maritime transport, sea communication, civil society, water as a playground, and civil engagement.

Piksel 16, ZERO-Level is an international festival for electronic art and technological freedom in Bergen. From the 24th to the 27th of November; concerts, AV performances, exhibitions and workshops will take place at BAS, PIKSEL Studio 207, Rom 8 and the Mill. Artists coming from a dozen countries will be presenting DIY bio-art, DIY electronics instruments, visual programming, live coding and FM radio workshops, installations and performances.

Introducing ShrimpCraft! Tools for the water curious. OPEN workshop

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) with Ross Dalziel and Adrian McEwen (Liverpool)
Open call for participants!
OPEN SOURCE FESTIVALS – DO IT ANYWAY (Sheffield, Uk)
16-05-2015 12:00 16:00

ShrimpCraft! is a project building water sensing computer kits with- and for kids.

The approach is for the group to become co-researchers and assemble simple water sensors based on the Arduino platform, and then use them to explore their water environment.

box_amanda

Instead of Arduino, we use shrimping.it to buy ‘shrimp core’ kits with Persistence Of Vision extender kits. Shrimping sell cheap kits and distribute free information on how to build Arduino compatible breadboards for prototyping.

Children build their own ‘computers’ and sensors and then visualise the data using simple LEDs flashing on the breadboard, a simple processing sketch and then draw graphs in minecraft on the FACT server at mc.fact.co.uk as its a space young people are very engaged with. Along the way they are introduced to how to go about making inferences from the data they collect in the environment; does a certain temperature and muddy water mean the water is healthy? Or do we need water full of useful stuff for animals to live in it?

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) is choreographer, Professor at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Academy of Dance. She works with shifting contexts of choreography in contemporary society through open research and experimentation.

Together with Ross Dalziel (DoeS Liverpool , UK) she is co-founder of Currently, a research initiative that aims to get people to engage with the marine world in new ways across different disciplines, from sailing to soap making and computer science.

Participating are a loose collective of artists, architects, scientists and technologists living mainly in coastal regions of Norway and the UK. From 2013-14 they have included Hillevi Munthe, Elisabeth Weihe, Jana Winderen, Etienne Gernez, Adrian McEwen, Hans Jørgen Wallin Weihe and artist groups Open Source Swan Pedalo, Owl Project and POINT FIVE. They have worked alongside Liverpool’s National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), National Museums Liverpool, Liverpool Maritime Museum and National Maritime Museum Oslo.

Each has a passion for the water and a drive to uncover hidden and forgotten spaces of the marine environment. Together they are producing new, exciting and eclectic work for the public to engage and play with – an open response to the marine sciences and maritime culture.

Solar kinetic sculptures. OPEN workshop.

Egil Paulsen
Open call for participants!
OPEN SOURCE FESTIVALS – DO IT ANYWAY (Sheffield, Uk)
16-05-2015 12:00 16:00

Workshop by Egil Paulsen (Oslo, Norway).
Creating simple solar kinetic sculptures (full workshop plan is under development).

Solar Sculptures
Nature gives way to speciation depending on the building blocks it can offer. Only by the decades, enormous amounts of plastic, silicon and metals has been dug up, refined, and put into circulation. It has been said that we are the genitals of our technology. We exist only to improve next years model. How can we recognize this quiet neighbour?

Kinetic sculptures: solar cells, dc motors, melted plastic, infrared heating lamps, table.

To participate send an email to: piksel15[at]piksel.no

Egil Paulsen works with installation, computer art, and video. He has a Bachelor degree from Bergen National Academy of the Arts where he was enrolled under Department of Fine Art. As a graduated Bachelor in computer science with a genuine interest in the subjects HCI and Accessibility, Egil has been involved in teaching, consulting and worked as an experience designer in many projects. Call: Piksel Remote Hacklab – Experimental Communication System Open Workshop, Venice

Piksel Remote Hacklab: Experimental Communication System Open Workshop,

Free 2-day workshop, Venice, May 28-29th, 12pm-late.

Recent studies have shown that the electrical resistance in soil above a buried carcass has a different resistivity to that of near by soil due to the decomposition of bodily tissue. The body leaves a “real”, quantifiable electrical trace when it is dead. Following this idea that traces of the dead can be measured via electricity it may be possible that these traces can be found elsewhere such as in the electromagnetic field.

In this workshop the construction of various electronic devices which apparently enhance the possibility of communication with spirits both audibly and visibly will be undertaken. Attempts at direct electromagnetic induction from such a vitalist earth to human brain will be made in the construction of a diy earth-brain interface, along with devices such as the Germanium Trans-Dimensional Communication Receptor (TDC) and other EMF detectors, emitters, and amplifiers.
These will then be applied to Venetian decomposing geo-bio canal soup mixes in a final experimental communication system performance.

The workshop is free. Places limited to 10.

Piksel presents: Arduino workshop for young people in collaboration with Trafo

We have invited Afroditi Psarra from Athens to host this exciting three-day workshop at the public library in Bergen.

Time: Monday 19. November – Wednesday 21. November.  4PM- 8PM

Who can attend: Young people between the ages 16 and 22. Anyone who is interested in Arduino programming, e-textiles, 8-bit music and DIY electronics. No necessary background in programming is required.

This workshop consists of an introduction to Arduino programming through the creation of a simple embroidered synthesizer. The participants are going to engage in the process of prototyping and building DIY electronics on textile using various components – such as LEDs, resistors, sensors, buttons and buzzers, and conductive materials such as conductive thread and conductive fabric. Through the construction of an embroidered synthesizer the participants will get familiar with the concept of electronic textiles and soft-circuits and their use in fashion, art and performance, while experimenting on 8-bit sound.
