open CALL for PROJECTS
For the exhibition and other parts of the program we currently seek projects in the following categories:

1. Installations
Projects to be included in the exhibitions. The works must be realized by
the use of free and open source technologies. For Piksel15 we specially
encourage projects in the field of DIY BIOart and renewable/sustainable
technologies to apply.

2. Audiovisual performance
Live art realized by the use of free software and/or open/DIY hardware.

3. Presentations
Innovative DIY/open hardware and audiovisual software tools or software art
released under a free/open license. (Also includes presentations of artistic
projects realized using free/open technologies.) For Piksel15 we specially
encourage projects in the field of DIY BIOart and renewable/sustainable
technologies to apply.

4. Workshops
Hands on workshops utilizing free software and/or open/DIY hardware for
artistic use. For Piksel15 we specially encourage projects in the field of
DIY BIOart and renewable/sustainable technologies to apply.

5. PikselSavers
Video and software art based on the screensaver format – short audiovisual
(non)narratives made for endless looping. Possible thematic fields includes
but are not limited to: sustainable resource allocation, renewable
technologies, energy harvesting, fair trade hardware, free content, open
access, open data, DIY economy, shared development. The works must be
realized by the use of free/open source technologies. –

THREE DAYS OF OPEN MEETINGS, DISCUSSIONS, PERFORMANCES & SCREENINGS, AND
PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS ON THE ACTUAL ISSUES OF TECH NOLOGY.

As the closing event of Mal au Pixel’s one year long Pixel Lab program,
we are organizing a full week-end of performances, talks and workshops,
addressing technologies and innovation critically, with an ecological
sensibility.

On this occasion, Pixel Lab will examine and collectively reflect on of
some of the very topical questions raised by the « digital tsunami » :
the transformations of identities and sociabilities ; the speculation on
the value of social capital in the era of social networks ; the
concentration and centralization of the web in a context of global
surveillance ; the rise of supra-human algorithmic networked entities,
etc …

ABOUT PIXEL LAB | LABORATOIRE OUVERT

Within the context of la Gaité lyrique’s Laboratoire Ouvert residency
program, Mal au Pixel has proposed from May 2014 to April 2015, a cycle
of open meetings, gatherings and workshops offering critical points of
view on current, emerging or future technologies. Artist and researchers
have been invited to transmit their know-how during a workshop, in areas
such as liquid data transmission low-tech systems to organic matter
based computers, celestial bodies tracking devices, Tempest based
radios, or even, cybernetic ghosts detectors.

In Parallel, Mal au Pixel and the Pixelache Network have conducted from
2013 to 2015, a cycle of international meetings and workshops. An
initiative gathering five European structures dedicated to open source
and open hardware : Pixelache (FI), Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS) and
Access Space (UK). These collaborations aimed to build and feed a
database of resources and documentation on organizing festivals,
supported, the European fund Grundtvig.

Pixel Lab has been developed as part of a larger EU Grundtvig supported
project called Open Sourcing Festivals, co-produced by five experimental
art, design and technology organizations from the Pixelache Network and
focused on open source culture. Open Sourcing Festivals is a mobile
circuit of workshops and seminars organized across Europe during
2013-2015 by Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS), Mal au Pixel (FR) and
Pixelache (FI). In the process the partners have been gradually working
towards ‘open-sourcing’ the knowledge embodied in their respective
workshops and festival production, in order to share it with a broader
range of users. A database of resources and documentation is under

ShrimpCraft! is a project building water sensing computer kits with- and for kids.

The approach is for the group to become co-researchers and assemble simple water sensors based on the Arduino platform, and then use them to explore their water environment.

Instead of Arduino, we use shrimping.it to buy ‘shrimp core’ kits with Persistence Of Vision extender kits. Shrimping sell cheap kits and distribute free information on how to build Arduino compatible breadboards for prototyping.

Children build their own ‘computers’ and sensors and then visualise the data using simple LEDs flashing on the breadboard, a simple processing sketch and then draw graphs in minecraft on the FACT server at mc.fact.co.uk as its a space young people are very engaged with. Along the way they are introduced to how to go about making inferences from the data they collect in the environment; does a certain temperature and muddy water mean the water is healthy? Or do we need water full of useful stuff for animals to live in it?

Amanda Steggell (Oslo, Norway) is choreographer, Professor at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Academy of Dance. She works with shifting contexts of choreography in contemporary society through open research and experimentation.

Together with Ross Dalziel (DoeS Liverpool , UK) she is co-founder of Currently, a research initiative that aims to get people to engage with the marine world in new ways across different disciplines, from sailing to soap making and computer science.

Participating are a loose collective of artists, architects, scientists and technologists living mainly in coastal regions of Norway and the UK. From 2013-14 they have included Hillevi Munthe, Elisabeth Weihe, Jana Winderen, Etienne Gernez, Adrian McEwen, Hans Jørgen Wallin Weihe and artist groups Open Source Swan Pedalo, Owl Project and POINT FIVE. They have worked alongside Liverpool’s National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), National Museums Liverpool, Liverpool Maritime Museum and National Maritime Museum Oslo.

Each has a passion for the water and a drive to uncover hidden and forgotten spaces of the marine environment. Together they are producing new, exciting and eclectic work for the public to engage and play with – an open response to the marine sciences and maritime culture.

Creating simple solar kinetic sculptures (full workshop plan is under development).

Solar Sculptures
Nature gives way to speciation depending on the building blocks it can offer. Only by the decades, enormous amounts of plastic, silicon and metals has been dug up, refined, and put into circulation. It has been said that we are the genitals of our technology. We exist only to improve next years model. How can we recognize this quiet neighbour?

Kinetic sculptures: solar cells, dc motors, melted plastic, infrared heating lamps, table.

Egil Paulsen works with installation, computer art, and video. He has a Bachelor degree from Bergen National Academy of the Arts where he was enrolled under Department of Fine Art. As a graduated Bachelor in computer science with a genuine interest in the subjects HCI and Accessibility, Egil has been involved in teaching, consulting and worked as an experience designer in many projects. Egil also works as a freelancer within visualization, illustration and system development.

Egil Paulsen will held a presentation showing works including Solar Sculptures, Ultrasonic Vision, WiFi-Shamanism, and a newly completed face tracking installation done for a big mask exhibition at Rubin Museum of Art in NY.

Workshop by Jon Nordby (Norway) where we will use visual programming in Flowhub to create custom sensors, interactions and sound experiences.

As a basis we have microcontrollers (Arduino) wired with sensors, both off-the-shelf and custom-built.
These we will connect to our laptops and/or embedded Linux machines (Raspberry Pi) and use
SuperCollider to create sound from these.

Depending on the interest and feedback, we may go on to develop an installation or performance
to be completed during the festival.

Jon Nordby is a creative software and electronics engineer who specializes in open source, Linux and Embedded Systems. Previously he has contributed to various libre graphics projects, including MyPaint, GIMP and OpenRaster. Since early 2014 Jon works for The Grid, developing the Flowhub visual programming IDE and runtimes for microcontrollers (MicroFlo), image processing (imgflo) and sound synthesis (sndflo).
For the last year he is also an active member of the Bitraf makerspace in Oslo, researching and developing digital fabrication methods including 3d-printing.
